The calculator works out two separate things. First, the plain gap: the difference between the two ages, sorted into bands. Up to 3 years reads as small, 4 to 7 as noticeable but common, 8 to 12 as wide enough for different life stages, and anything beyond that as large.
Second, it runs the old half-your-age-plus-seven check. The older age is halved, rounded down, and 7 is added; if the younger partner is at least that number, the pairing passes the folk rule. The check always anchors on the older partner, and the form takes ages from 16 to 99. Neither number is a judgement — the gap is context, and the rule is a talking point.
The gap is 7 years, which the tool files under noticeable but common. For the folk rule, half of 31 is 15 (rounded down), plus 7 makes 22. The younger partner is 24, comfortably above the line, so the pairing passes.
A 17-year gap lands in the large band, where the tool notes to expect different priorities at times. The rule asks for half of 38 plus 7, which is 26. At 21, the younger partner sits five years below that line — the tool says so, then reminds you it is a rule of thumb.
Things Worth Knowing
- Two birth years, one reading. The score blends your age gap with each life stage, which is why the same gap reads differently at 22-and-27 than at 42-and-47.
